Hot, hilly and hard
June 24, 2007 Back home for some local..
I am back home and the racing was going to be a local one. It's always nice to spend time at home. The coaching biz is really doing well. Our clients are killing it and the time with my wife and kids are invaluable.
I got to commentate the Lenoir Criterium (3 thousand for the Pro Men!) and one word comes to mind. Hilly. Hot, Hill, Big...Hill. That's more than one, but I think ya get the point. All the big guns were at Nature Valley or Rochester, so mostly it was a local flav with some unique dynamics. The race started Darwinian. The damn hill just melted everyone for the 330pm start. Full zips were a must in this race...along with a fire hose. Lap after Lap guys popped until we were rid of fat and on to the filet. It seemed that no one wanted to pin it on the downhill because they were so damn knackered from the uphill. So, eventually Terry Huss just peeled away on a preem and that was it.
He stayed away the whole race...with the ageless John Patterson, 46, and the young Hot Tubes racer who I coached when he was just a cricket, Alder Martz, 16, fought gamely to bring Huss back. Patterson got within 6 seconds and caved. Martz rolled in for 3rd.
Alex Holden and the whole Sledge Hammer Charlies/Motovelo crew worked their butts off for a great grassroots race!!!
Iron Hill Twilight in West Chester, PA is next!
